BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS ACADEMY.

Rev. Fr. Robert W. Burke, a Columban missionary priest saw the need of opening a high school principally for the children of works of Southern Operation of Insular Lumber Company, Phils. located at Bacuyangan. From the humble beginnings of a branch school status of Saint Columban’s Academy, Hinoba-an, the Hon. Secretary of education granted his recognition in July 19, 1967, No. 30 to operate a first year High School in 1967.

In January 27, 1977, the branch school was renamed Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, Inc. as amended in the articles of incorporation. Hence, the first graduation ceremony of OLSA in a new name was held in March 1977.

OUR LADY OF SORROWS ACADEMY, Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit sectarian academy at Bacuyangan, Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental. The academy is an evangelizing arm of the OUR LADY OF SORROWS Parish spreading Gospel to the faithful especially the underprivileged. The school is just one of the many legacies of the Columban Missionaries in the Philippines.

In 1998, Columban Priests started to turn over school and parishes to the hands of the Diocesan Filipino Fathers with due respect and gratitude in the dedication of the Columban Fathers in putting up schools.

In 2001, the school celebrated her 25th graduation ceremony, a silver celebration for the OLSANS who made a hallow spot in the educational travail. Many of her graduates were successful and their chosen fields of endeavors and were the best workers here and abroad.

To this day, OLSA remains steadfast in her mission making Filipino youth functionally productive graduates. To provide basic quality education, the academy continuously updates her physical plant and facilities to provide a better service to the young minds of Bacuyangan and neighboring places who opted a catholic education. The school offers them a peaceful space in the campus and comfort in the classrooms making student lives in their curriculum and other activities vibrant and meaningful.

The growth of OLSA is not only in her physical facilities but also by the successful graduates far and wide. It’s a continuing challenge towards excellence to grow in religious and academic pursuits in total service and involvement in the community. (jbg)
